The Arc/k Project

We promote, teach, and share accessible training for the type of photography used to create photogrammetry, a fusion of mathematics, photography and computer graphics to derive accurate, textured, 3D digital models. Our aim is to ensure that the decision about which objects, sites, or buildings to choose for archiving and digitization is in the hands of the community in which that heritage resides. In this way, people can participate preemptively in protecting their own cultural heritage assets by capturing photos of them before they are damaged or destroyed. Our goals are to uphold digital imaging and data standards, provide transparency, and pursue innovative applications for digital heritage preservation. We seek novel approaches to open access platforms for existing archives and we practice a values-based approach, cooperating with traditional management systems and practices of local communities. We are deeply invested in both experimentation and innovation to advance these technologies (and associated practices) to further both preservation AND dissemination of tangible and intangible heritage alike, guided by culturally affiliated stakeholders and their intrinsic patterns of knowledge and expression as weighed against established orthodoxy.
